Here is the first thing to know about Haiti: She was the first Caribbean country to gain its freedom, and to have potential. In 1789, Haiti was France’s richest colony, and today:
- It is a nation of children.
- Gray hair is getting harder and harder to find.
- Eight million people live there.
- Four million are under age 14.
- Too many of them are children without parents.
- According to official accounts, 250,000 have lost one parent or both to AIDS.
The lack of state support for families, the limited development for community-based programs, and the increasing reliance on institutions make the environment for care in Haiti very different from the one in other countries. Incredibly, the direct impact of these conditions is that 200,000 or more children are in orphanages or institutionalized group setting. Unfortunately, the economic strains and organizational challenges of caring for these children are very limited. Sources: Family Health International FHI/USAID 2005
Long-term institutional care in orphanages is particularly inappropriate for infants and young children. Once they grow older and have to take care of themselves, the orphaned living in these segregate environment have a difficult time reintegrating the society. In addition to being unprepared for adult life, these children often have emotional withdrawal, mental instability, fearfulness, and reduced learning ability.
On that basis, the goal of At-Risk Children Foundation’s, is to create a healthy family-oriented environment for these children to grow by addressing their physical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs in order to improve and sustain their quality of life. Such a life while growing up will prepare and equip them for an independent future. As adults, they will be able to stand on their own and achieve self-reliance, financial independence and social integration. Our future project “ The Sovéyo Village is the key indicator for the future of these kids.
